Nora’s Practice Philosophy
Nora practices from a Health at Every Size (TM) lens using a non-diet and all foods fit approach to nutrition counseling. Nora weaves in principles of intuitive eating into counseling approach according to her client’s readiness.
Nora believes in a client centered and compassionate approach to nutrition counseling. Nora takes the time to get to know you as a whole person so that she can best provide support in a meaningful and individualized way!
Nora uses a step by step approach to supporting you in healing your relationship to food. First and foremost, Nora supports you to nourish your body often enough and with enough food to support your unique needs (varying depending upon your specific circumstances). From there, Nora support you to improve meal balance, flexibility with food and to have the ability to eat a variety of foods with a greater sense of confidence and ease. Finally, Nora supports you to feel comfortable eating in many circumstances/situations and begin to weave intuitive eating principles into our work together throughout the process.
Nora helps you to challenge and question your food rules by debunking the nutrition misinformation that is out there, and supporting you to understand and appreciate how food really works in the body. Other areas Nora may support you with might be meal and snack support, meal planning, journaling, reflective activities, and practicing self-compassion.
Meet Nora Heighton
Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist in Calgary, Alberta
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me better. I’ve been a Registered Dietitian now for 8 years and a Registered Yoga Teacher for 2 years. I’m registered in good standing with the College of Dietitians of Alberta. I’ve finally arrived at a place in life where I am able to have a practice specializing in nutrition counseling for eating disorders and disordered eating. This is my passion and I knew when I started this journey many years ago, that this was eventually where I wanted to be, supporting folks like you who are on the healing journey.
I have a special place in my heart for this work as I come to the field with lived experience recovering from an eating disorder. It was through my own experience with an eating disorder and the recovery journey (many years ago now) that I developed a passion for advocacy work, volunteering, and supporting others who are struggling with the same thing. I have volunteered as a peer support group facilitator for individuals with eating disorders through the Eating Disorders Action Group in Halifax, and have also facilitated the Body Project. In the past 2 years, I have taken the initiative to deepen my education and training in nutrition counseling for eating disorders (see qualifications below if you are interested to know more!)
I’m a compassionate guide for you on your own journey and I approach nutrition counseling in an open and gentle way. My goal is always to provide a space where you feel supported.
